The rare wildlife and scenic appeal are only part of this memorable journey. We will take you on an intimate tour (maximum 9 people) designed to provide flexibility as we never know what surprises nature will offer us, making every tour a bit different from the last. We have provided a couple of options that can be included during the tour to enhance your experience. The tour duration is 6 hours.

Trip Description

• Visit Lanarch Castle and learn about New Zealand's wonderful flora and fauna. You'll have plenty of time to explore the other gardens or go into the castle itself. (please note entry into the castle is an additional $15.00NZD)
• A scenic drive to the spots big buses can't get to, with various opportunities to stretch your legs.
• View the Royal Albatross at the only mainland breeding colony in the world.
• View various waders and waterfowl around the magical inlets - a birdwatcher paradise.
• Visit the Otakou Marae
• View the rare and endangered Yellow-Eyed Penguin from our private hide.
• Get up close to the NZ Fur Seal that has made a dramatic recovery from near extinction.
• Get close to the NZ Sea-Lion - the rarest in the world
• Learn the extraordinary history of the area

Options to Enhance Your Tour:

We have provided you with two options for superior viewing of the regal Royal Albatross.

Option 1 - Entry into the Royal Albatross Centre

You simply won't get any closer than this! Enjoy a rewarding close-up encounter viewing the Royal Albatross from the Richdale Observatory. You will be taken to a birdwatchers paradise by a passionate guide during this 1 hour tour. Our guide will join you or meet you (depending on group) before continuing our tour.

Option 2 - Join the Monarch Cruise Boat

All Aboard! The Monarch offers a unique experience to get close to NZ Fur Seals, Hooker Sea-Lions and many other nesting sea birds. The boat will follow the flight path of the Royal Albatross as they return from their feeding area. This is a 60 minute wildlife expedition that always throws up something new, again our guide will pick you up from Weller's Rock afterwards.

We provide light refreshments, binoculars and a pick up/drop-off service to all centrally located accommodation.

You will require warm clothing, as Dunedin weather is somewhat unpredictable. We recommend good footwear and good humour.

This is an active trip and requires a reasonable standard of fitness.
